Apple pie dump cake uses canned apple pie filling for the base, so there is no peeling or slicing. Cinnamon is stirred into the apples, a dry cake mix covers them, and sliced butter melts into a crust that bakes like a streusel. If you like the crunch of pie topping, chopped pecans on top add more.

Serve it warm with vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of caramel sauce. The apples stay soft, and the top gets crisp at the edges. It makes a good fall dessert, but there is nothing seasonal about the ingredients, so it can be made all year.

The cake keeps for a few days covered in the refrigerator. Warm a serving in the microwave for 20 to 30 seconds.

Ingredients

Into the dish

  • 2 (21-ounce) cans apple pie filling
  • 1½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 (15.25-ounce) box yellow cake mix
  • 2 sticks butter, cut in thin slices
  • ½ cup chopped pecans, optional
  • nonstick cooking spray

Directions

  1. Heat the oven to 350°F. Spray a 9-by-13-inch baking dish.
  2. Spread the apple pie filling in the dish. Stir in the cinnamon.
  3. Sprinkle the dry cake mix over the apples in an even layer. Do not stir.
  4. Cover with thin slices of butter. Sprinkle the pecans on top, if using.
  5. Bake 45 to 55 minutes, until the topping is golden and the apples are bubbling.
  6. Cool 15 minutes before serving.

It's done when the topping is golden brown with no dry, powdery patches, and the fruit is bubbling at the edges of the dish.

Cover leftovers and put them in the refrigerator within two hours.

Tips

  • Cut any large apple slices in the filling into smaller pieces for easier serving.
  • Skip the pecans if anyone has a nut allergy.
