Chocolate cherry dump cake uses the same layers as the other dump cakes, with a chocolate cake mix over cherry pie filling. As it bakes, the chocolate mix and butter form a fudgy, cake-like topping, and the cherries stay bubbling underneath. The flavors are close to a Black Forest cake.
A handful of chocolate chips scattered over the top makes it richer. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped topping. Because chocolate hides browning, judge the doneness by the bubbling fruit at the edges and a firm topping, not by color alone.
Chocolate and cherry is a familiar pairing, and a dark cherry filling suits it. Serve with vanilla ice cream or a little whipped cream.
Ingredients
Into the dish
- 2 (21-ounce) cans cherry pie filling
- 1 (15.25-ounce) box chocolate cake mix
- 1½ sticks butter, cut in thin slices
- ½ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips, optional
- nonstick cooking spray
Directions
- Heat the oven to 350°F. Spray a 9-by-13-inch baking dish.
- Spread the cherry pie filling in the dish.
- Sprinkle the dry chocolate cake mix over the cherries in an even layer. Do not stir.
- Lay thin slices of butter over the top. Scatter the chocolate chips, if using.
- Bake 45 to 55 minutes, until the fruit bubbles at the edges and the topping is firm.
- Cool 15 minutes before serving.
It's done when the fruit is bubbling at the edges and the topping is firm when pressed lightly, with no dry, powdery patches.
Cover leftovers and put them in the refrigerator within two hours.
Tips
- Watch the edges. Chocolate dark enough to hide burning is easy to overbake.
- The cherries are hot. Let the dish stand before scooping.
